It has been more than a month since our last communication via email, and during which period I have been very fortunate to have learned something about the “autonomous vehicular control” concept that you mentioned in your previous email through the advice and assistance of my current project mentor, Dr. (name). I am resultantly writing to report to you the learning I have gained through such intriguing personal exposure and hopefully can have your valuable opinions on such regard.

Through my enthusiastic efforts I have learned about the computer simulation that the project team had designed and proposed to realize an “intelligent” system that could sense, model and diagnosis a dynamic domain, determine possible courses of action to accomplish a goal in the domain, and assess the various courses of actions to determine optimal action.
I feel that certain concepts and simulation techniques employed in this project should be of relevance to the “autonomous vehicular control” that you mentioned in your previous email despite its purpose is in optimal traffic flow control instead of computer controlled cars. I wonder if you can be so kind to advise me whether if I should continue spending time and efforts to learn more about this project and whether if you think such efforts will better prepare myself to join your current research team.

I especially appreciate your informative introduction to your current research interests relevant to information theory for multi-terminal networks. I am therefore writing to declare my strong commitment to performing research works under your guidance and hopefully by reading the following research statement you will find me an ideal student to join your research team.
I have strong interest in learning more about network information theory particularly on efficient and reliable communication in multi-terminal settings because of their fast-growing applications to Internet, wireless cellular and LAN data services, ad hoc networks and sensor networks.
I have paid attention to the connections between networking and information theory; for instance, scaling laws in networks, network coding, implementation and theory of multi-user systems, wireless network design involving multi-input multi-output channels, and queuing and delay issues in information-theoretic capacity settings. I took interest in finding that complexity of physical layer issues in wireless networks has prompted an inter-layer approach that fits well in the context of information theory. On the other hand, practical networking problems have also required classical approaches to multi-user information theory. Theoretical developments in information theory have changed the angle of attack on information theoretic problems of networking.
So far through my outside reading efforts, I have learned how J. Barros and S.D. Servetto addressed multiterminal source coding, conferencing and channel coding problems. I have learned how M. Effros, M. Medard, T. Ho, S. Ray, D. Karger, R Koetter and B. Hassibi treated source, channel and network coding in a common framework by using random linear coding arguments. I have also studied how M. Gastpar developed a cut-set bound for networks that utilized the Wyner-Ziv rate-distortion function, and further gave scaling laws for Gaussian sensor networks.
The topics that currently intrigued me include network coding, multi-terminal information theory for networks. During my doctoral studies, I am interested in proposing feasible transmission and coding strategies to support the design and implementation of sophisticated networks. I intend to enhance my understanding of optimal networks models and novel coding strategies.
